Reigenreigen / 霊験

The manifest power or miraculous efficacy of a deity or Buddha, often expressed as "reigen arataka."

Reigen describes the tangible manifestation of divine power — healing from illness, prayers answered, disasters averted. The phrase "reigen arataka" (miraculous and manifest) is used to describe shrines and temples whose spiritual efficacy is widely acknowledged.

Collections of miracle stories (reigentan) have been important vehicles for spreading faith since ancient times. "Konjaku Monogatari-shū" and "Nihon Ryōiki" contain numerous accounts of divine intervention. The pilgrimages to the 33 Kannon temples of the Saigoku and Bandō circuits are structured around the reigen of Kannon Bosatsu. While scientific proof of miracles remains elusive, the psychological effect of faith transforming behavior and attitude is difficult to deny.
