Chinju

Beliefs & Concepts

Chinjuchinju / 鎮守

A deity that watches over and pacifies a specific area or community — closely related to ujigami.

Chinju is a deity whose role is to "calm and protect" a particular piece of land. The concept overlaps with ujigami but emphasizes the pacifying, stabilizing function of the guardian spirit. "Chinju no mori" (guardian forest) — the woods surrounding a shrine — reflects this protective role.

Meiji Jingu's forest is a remarkable example: planted with approximately 100,000 donated saplings in the Taishō era, it has grown over a century into a thriving natural woodland. Despite standing in the heart of Tokyo, over 3,000 species of plants and animals have been documented within its borders — a globally recognized demonstration of how chinju no mori function as vital ecological preserves.
