Emakakeemakake / 絵馬掛け

A rack or board where visitors hang their ema prayer tablets within shrine grounds.

The emakake is a dedicated rack or board where visitors hang their ema — wooden tablets inscribed with prayers and wishes. The sight of hundreds of ema packed tightly together has become one of the most recognizable scenes at Japanese shrines.

Ema are periodically collected by shrine staff and ritually burned in a ceremony that sends the wishes heavenward. During exam season, Tenmangu shrines overflow with ema bearing pleas for success — their sheer volume alone conveys the earnestness of the students. In response to privacy concerns, some shrines now offer “ema covers” to conceal personal information written on the tablets.
