Mikoshimikoshi / 神輿

A sacred palanquin carried through the streets during festivals, believed to transport the deity among the people.

The mikoshi is a portable shrine carried on the shoulders of worshippers during festivals, allowing the deity to leave the shrine and travel through the community — a procession called "togyo." This annual journey purifies the land and distributes divine blessings among the people.

The vigorous shaking ("momi") and lifting ("sashiage") of the mikoshi are believed to amplify the deity's spiritual power and scatter it across the surroundings. Tokyo's Sanja Matsuri features over 100 neighborhood mikoshi parading through Asakusa with thundering "Seiya! Soiya!" chants. By contrast, Kyoto's Gion Matsuri mikoshi procession is solemn and stately — the same mikoshi culture takes on completely different characters across regions.
