Shinkyoshinkyo / 神橋

A sacred bridge on shrine grounds symbolizing the passage from the mortal world to the divine realm.

A shinkyo is a sacred bridge that symbolically connects the mundane and divine worlds. Often painted vermilion, it represents spiritual purification — crossing the bridge cleanses the visitor. Some shinkyo are reserved exclusively for the gods and opened only during special ceremonies.

Nikko Toshogu's Shinkyo is counted among Japan's three most unusual bridges, a vermilion wooden span over the Daiya River and a UNESCO World Heritage component. The Uji Bridge at Ise Grand Shrine's Inner Shrine stretches 101.8 meters and is rebuilt every 20 years alongside the shrine's ritual reconstruction. Far more than structural features, these bridges serve as spiritual passages connecting this world and the next.
