Kaguradenkaguraden / 神楽殿

A stage building within shrine grounds dedicated to performances of sacred music and dance for the gods.

The kaguraden is a dedicated stage for performing kagura — sacred music and dance offered to please and pacify the gods. The word “kagura” may derive from “kamukura” (seat of the gods), referring to the place where deities descend to receive the performance.

Izumo Taisha's kaguraden is famous for its colossal shimenawa rope — approximately 13 meters long and weighing 5.2 tons. The tradition of throwing coins into the rope for luck has been banned due to damage concerns. In rural areas, all-night “yokagura” performances during autumn festivals remain a living tradition, with Takachiho's night kagura in Miyazaki being particularly renowned.
