Rituals & Annual Events

Kitōkitō / 祈祷

A formal prayer ceremony conducted by a priest to petition the gods or Buddha for specific blessings.

Kitō is a formal prayer service where a priest recites norito (Shinto) or sutras (Buddhist) to convey the worshipper's specific wish to the divine. Common occasions include shichi-go-san, safe childbirth, exam success, business prosperity, healing, and traffic safety.

To receive kitō, visitors register at the shrine office and present an offering called "hatsuho-ryō" (typically 5,000–10,000 yen). The ceremony involves ascending to the haiden (shōden), receiving oharai, hearing the norito, and performing tamagushi hōten. The talisman received afterward is meant to be enshrined at home or carried on one's person for continued divine protection.
