Shaden

Shrine & Temple Buildings

Shadenshaden / 社殿

A collective term for the buildings of a shrine, including the main sanctuary, worship hall, and related structures.

Shaden is the general term for all shrine buildings — honden, haiden, heiden, and supporting structures. Each shrine's architectural style reflects its history, region, and the character of its enshrined deity.

Ise Grand Shrine's unique tradition of “Shikinen Sengū” — completely rebuilding its shaden every 20 years — embodies the Shinto philosophy of perpetual renewal. The most recent rebuilding in 2013 cost approximately 55 billion yen. At the other extreme, sites like Okinoshima's Munakata Taisha Okitsumiya have no shaden at all, with the island itself serving as the divine body — preserving the most ancient form of Japanese worship.
