Ubusunagami

Beliefs & Concepts

Ubusunagamiubusunagami / 産土神

The guardian deity of one's birthplace, believed to protect a person throughout their entire life.

The ubusunagami is the deity of the land where one was born, believed to provide lifelong protection regardless of where one later lives. The word "ubusuna" may derive from "birth sand" — the soil of one's native place. While ujigami protects one's current residence, ubusunagami protects based on birthplace.

The "omiya-mairi" ceremony — a baby's first shrine visit around one month after birth — is performed at the ubusunagami shrine to report the birth and pray for healthy growth. Even after moving far away, the bond with one's ubusunagami is considered lifelong and unbreakable.
