Tamagakitamagaki / 玉垣

A decorative fence enclosing the most sacred areas of a shrine, often bearing the names of donors.

Tamagaki are fences enclosing the holiest sections of a shrine, serving as barriers preventing unauthorized entry. The prefix “tama” (玉) is an honorific meaning “beautiful” or “precious,” indicating a fence worthy of divine space. Materials range from wood to stone and concrete.

Donor names are often inscribed on the panels — a practice called “tamagaki hōnō” expressing devotion and gratitude. At famous shrines, celebrity and athlete names can sometimes be spotted along the tamagaki. At Ise Grand Shrine, the honden is enclosed by four concentric fences — mizugaki, uchi-tamagaki, soto-tamagaki, and itagaki — with the innermost accessible only to the Emperor and imperial envoys.
