Tamagushi Hōtentamagushi hōten / 玉串奉奠

The Shinto ritual of offering a sakaki branch adorned with paper streamers to the gods — comparable to Buddhist incense offering.

Tamagushi hōten is the act of offering a tamagushi — a sakaki branch with shide (paper streamers) attached — before the gods. "Hōten" means "to reverently present." This is one of the most significant acts of devotion in Shinto worship, comparable to burning incense in Buddhism.

The proper technique: receive the tamagushi with the right hand on top holding the base and the left hand supporting the leaves underneath. Rotate it 180 degrees clockwise so the base points toward the altar, then place it gently on the offering table. Follow with two bows, two claps, one bow. The rotation symbolizes offering the life force (represented by the root end) to the deity. Though intimidating at first, sincerity of heart matters most.
