Ujigami

Beliefs & Concepts

Ujigamiujigami / 氏神

The local guardian deity who watches over a specific community and its residents.

Ujigami is the deity protecting a particular territory and its inhabitants. Originally denoting the ancestral god of a specific clan (uji), the concept shifted during the medieval period from blood-based to land-based protection, becoming the communal "guardian god of the neighborhood."

Nearly every locality in Japan has an ujigami shrine, and the Jinja Honchō can help identify which shrine serves any given address. Traditionally, paying respects to the ujigami when moving to a new area is the first step toward feeling settled in one's new home. Hatsumōde (first shrine visit of the New Year) is properly meant to be made at one's ujigami shrine.
