Massha

Shrine & Temple Buildings

Masshamassha / 末社

A small sub-shrine on the grounds enshrining deities without direct kinship to the main god.

Massha are small shrines within (or near) a shrine's grounds that enshrine deities other than the main god's direct relatives. They often house popular deities known for specific blessings — Inari for business, Tenjin for academics, Benzaiten for arts.

In some cases, a massha attracts more visitors than the main shrine itself, particularly those dedicated to romance or exam success. Walking the full grounds of a large shrine often leads to unexpected encounters with charming massha — each one a small window into the community's spiritual history.
