Sessha

Shrine & Temple Buildings

Sesshasessha / 摂社

A sub-shrine closely related to the main deity, ranking higher than massha in the shrine hierarchy.

A sessha is a smaller shrine within the grounds that enshrines a deity with a direct connection to the main shrine's god — typically a child, spouse, or deity involved in the shrine's founding. Sessha rank higher than massha and receive more elaborate ritual attention.

Ise Grand Shrine has 43 sessha across its Inner and Outer Shrines, each with its own dedicated rituals. Visiting sessha at major shrines provides deeper insight into the lineage and mythology surrounding the main deity.
