Goriyaku

Beliefs & Concepts

Goriyakugoriyaku / 御利益

The blessings and benefits believed to be bestowed by gods or Buddha upon worshippers.

Goriyaku refers to the divine blessings and favors received from gods or Buddha. When pronounced "riyaku" (with the religious reading), it means spiritual grace — distinct from "rieki" (profit). Shrines and temples are known for specific goriyaku: matchmaking, academic success, business prosperity, healing, safe travel, and more.

These blessings derive from the character of the enshrined deity — Tenmangū shrines offer academic success (Sugawara no Michizane was a scholar), Izumo Taisha grants marriage blessings (Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto is the god of relationships), and Nishinomiya Shrine bestows business fortune (Ebisu is the merchant god). However, goriyaku is understood as divine assistance, not automatic fulfillment — maintaining humble effort is considered the essential first step toward receiving blessings.
