Sūkeisha

Beliefs & Concepts

Sūkeishasūkeisha / 崇敬者

A person who deeply reveres a particular shrine regardless of geographic proximity.

A sūkeisha is someone who supports and venerates a specific shrine based on personal devotion rather than geographic proximity. While ujiko are defined by where they live, sūkeisha choose their shrine based on spiritual affinity. Many shrines organize "sūkeikai" (devotee associations) providing special worship opportunities, newsletters, and exclusive talismans.

Meiji Jingu and Ise Grand Shrine draw sūkeisha from across the nation. The concept of maintaining a "spiritual hometown" shrine — visiting periodically regardless of distance — reflects the flexible and personal nature of Japanese religious practice.
