Hōmotsuden

Shrine & Temple Buildings

Hōmotsudenhōmotsuden / 宝物殿

A museum within shrine or temple grounds displaying historically and artistically significant treasures.

The hōmotsuden houses culturally significant artifacts accumulated over centuries — swords, armor, Buddhist statues, scrolls, ancient documents, and more. Many items are designated National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.

Kasuga Taisha's treasure hall contains 354 National Treasures — the most held by any single shrine in Japan. Itsukushima Shrine preserves the “Heike Nōkyō,” exquisite sutras donated by Taira no Kiyomori that embody Heian-era aesthetics. Treasure halls typically charge a small admission fee, but the quality of their collections often rivals major museums.
