Ōharae

Rituals & Annual Events

Ōharaeōharae / 大祓

A biannual purification ceremony (June 30 and December 31) cleansing the accumulated sins and impurities of six months.

Ōharae is performed twice yearly — on June 30 as "Nagoshi no Harae" (Summer Purification) and December 31 as "Toshikoshi no Harae" (Year-End Purification). Participants write their name and age on paper figures called "katashiro," rub them on their body to transfer impurities, then have them cast into water or burned.

Many shrines feature "chinowa-kuguri" (sacred ring passing) during Nagoshi no Harae. In Kyoto, eating "minazuki" — a triangular confection of sweet rice cake topped with azuki beans — is a seasonal tradition associated with this purification festival. Ōharae serves not just individual purification but the grand purpose of cleansing the entire nation of accumulated spiritual impurities.
