Keidaishakeidaisha / 境内社

A collective term for all sub-shrines (sessha and massha) within a shrine's grounds.

Keidaisha is the umbrella term for sessha and massha — all smaller shrines found within the main shrine's property. Some great shrines host dozens of keidaisha, while smaller neighborhood shrines may have none at all. Those located outside the main grounds are called “keigaisha” (境外社).

Exploring the keidaisha reveals what kinds of prayers the local community has valued over the centuries. An Inari sub-shrine suggests a merchant community; a Tenjin sub-shrine points to reverence for learning. In this way, keidaisha serve as small mirrors reflecting the spiritual history of their surroundings.
