Gōshi

Beliefs & Concepts

Gōshigōshi / 合祀

The practice of enshrining multiple deities together in a single shrine, often through shrine mergers.

Gōshi means combining multiple deities into one shrine, typically when smaller shrines are merged. The Meiji-era "Shrine Consolidation Order" mandated one shrine per village, reducing approximately 200,000 shrines to about 120,000.

The naturalist Minakata Kumagusu fiercely opposed this policy, arguing scientifically that destroying sacred groves would devastate rare ecosystems. His campaign is now recognized as a pioneering environmental conservation movement. The legacy of gōshi continues to shape discussions about rural shrine consolidation in depopulating areas today.
