Rituals & Annual Events

Yakuyokeyakuyoke / 厄除け

A prayer ritual performed during unlucky years to ward off misfortune and protect against disaster.

Yakuyoke is the practice of receiving prayers at a shrine or temple to avert the misfortunes associated with yakudoshi (unlucky years). The period between New Year and Setsubun (early February) is the peak season for yakuyoke prayers.

Famous yakuyoke destinations include Kawasaki Daishi and Sano Yakuyoke Daishi in the Kantō region, and Kadoma Yakujin and Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū in the Kansai area. Yakuyoke is sought not only during designated unlucky years but also during "happō-fusagari" (eight-direction blocked) years or periods of persistent misfortune — serving as a practical spiritual reset for moving forward with renewed confidence.
