Yakudoshiyakudoshi / 厄年

Specific ages considered prone to misfortune — 42 for men and 33 for women being the most critical.

Yakudoshi are ages believed to bring increased susceptibility to misfortune. For men, the critical years are 25, 42, and 61; for women, 19, 33, and 37. The year before (mae-yaku) and after (ato-yaku) are also considered risky, making it a three-year period of caution. Ages 42 for men and 33 for women are designated "taiyaku" (great calamity years).

The association of 42 with disaster partly stems from the wordplay "42 = shi-ni = death." However, these ages genuinely coincide with periods of increased professional responsibility and physical change, making yakudoshi a practical reminder to reassess one's health and lifestyle. Visiting a shrine for yakuyoke (calamity-warding) prayers between New Year and Setsubun is common practice.
