Bunreibunrei / 分霊

The practice of dividing a deity's spirit to enshrine it at a new location without diminishing the original.

Bunrei is the practice of dividing a deity's spirit to establish it at a new shrine — like lighting a new candle from an existing flame without diminishing the original fire. This mechanism enables a single deity to be worshipped at thousands of locations simultaneously.

All 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan received their bunrei from Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, and all 25,000 Hachiman shrines trace their spirit to Usa Jingū in Ōita. The formal ceremony of receiving a bunrei is called "kanjō" — a solemn ritual in which the divided spirit is officially welcomed and enshrined at its new home.
