Nihai-Nihakushu-Ichihai

Places of Worship

Nihai-Nihakushu-Ichihainihai nihakushu ichihai / 二拝二拍手一拝

The standard Shinto worship sequence: two deep bows, two handclaps, and one final bow.

This sequence — also called “nirei nihakushu ichirei” — is the standard prayer etiquette at most Japanese shrines: bow deeply twice, clap your hands twice, then bow once more. Surprisingly, this standardized form was established only in the Meiji period and is relatively modern.

Izumo Taisha uses a unique variation: two bows, four claps, one bow, and during grand ceremonies, eight claps are performed. At funerals, “shinobi-te” (silent claps) are used — the hands are brought together without making a sound. Knowing these contextual variations allows for more thoughtful and appropriate worship.
