Sanjūnotōsanjūnotō / 三重塔

A three-tiered Buddhist pagoda, more numerous than five-story pagodas and often found at regional temples.

Three-story pagodas serve the same sacred purpose as their five-story counterparts but are more compact and far more numerous, with approximately 60 surviving examples across Japan. While five-story pagodas are symbols of great metropolitan temples, three-story pagodas graced more modest regional temples, leaving fine specimens throughout the countryside.

Yakushi-ji's East Pagoda in Nara, praised as "frozen music" for its exquisite proportions, is the most celebrated sanjūnotō. Each tier features mokoshi (decorative sub-roofs) giving it the appearance of six stories. Anraku-ji in Nagano houses Japan's only octagonal three-story pagoda, designated as a National Treasure. The smaller scale of three-story pagodas often makes their overall compositional beauty stand out even more distinctly.
