Shichi-Go-Sanshichi-go-san / 七五三

A rite of passage celebrating children's growth at ages 3, 5, and 7 with a shrine visit.

Shichi-go-san celebrates children's milestones with a shrine visit — traditionally both boys and girls at 3, boys at 5, and girls at 7. While November 15 is the designated date, families now visit between October and December at their convenience.

The custom combines three court ceremonies: "kamioki" (letting hair grow) at 3, "hakamagi" (first hakama trousers) at 5, and "obitoki" (first adult obi sash) at 7. In an era of high infant mortality, "nanatsu made wa kami no uchi" (until seven, children belong to the gods) expressed how reaching age 7 was a genuine milestone. The "chitose-ame" (thousand-year candy) given to children carries parents' earnest wish for longevity.
