Oharaioharai / お祓い

A ritual of cleansing sin and impurity using prayer words and the waving of a purification wand.

Oharai is the Shinto practice of chanting harae-kotoba (purification words) and waving an ōnusa (purification wand) to cleanse sin and impurity. It is the mandatory first step of any formal shrine worship — shichi-go-san, weddings, yakuyoke, and car blessings all begin with oharai to prepare participants for the divine presence.

During oharai, the priest intones "harai tamae, kiyome tamae" (cleanse and purify) while participants bow their heads to receive the purification. "Car oharai" for new vehicles and "house oharai" after moving are surprisingly common in daily Japanese life — practical applications of an ancient ritual for calming invisible anxieties and starting fresh.
